Tractor Trailers

Tractor trailers are large diesel trucks that are used to haul the heaviest loads anywhere there are roads. They are also known as semis, 18 wheelers, or a rig. They are basically large engines with a cab for the driver that can connect to a variety of trailers both open and enclosed.

Tractor trailers or big rigs keep goods travelling from their origin to their destination and are hugely responsible for keeping the economy of the United States and many other countries functioning properly. When trucking strikes are threatened the drivers almost always get their demands, and a strike has never taken place because of the incredible importance of the trucking industry. If the drivers did strike grocery stores would quickly be emptied and people would become unruly.

Tractor trailers typically have three axels, one in the front for steering and two in the back for bearing a lot of the weight of the load. The rear axels typically have two sets of tires and are called dualies. This is used to prevent accidents incase of a tire blow out. If one blows there is a tire right next to it so the driver can safely pull over and change the tire.
